Bina Parkland Playground

Bina Parkland Playground

The eagerly anticipated Bina Parkland playground is now open for the community to enjoy at Princess Wallington Reserve in Balga. This playground is the first stage of a comprehensive three-phase community parkland project, designed to provide a vibrant, inclusive space for families and residents.

The newly opened regional playground offers a variety of attractions that cater to children of all ages. Among the highlights are a thrilling flying fox, a range of swings, a learning circle, and a climbing frame that challenges kids to explore and have fun. The playground’s design places a strong emphasis on nature, seamlessly incorporating native trees and vegetation into the layout. The pathways wind through the park, and logs from the surrounding parkland have been repurposed into bench seating and log steppers, blending the playground with its natural environment.

The thoughtful selection of new plants in the playground is a nod to the Balga region’s rich cultural heritage, specifically the Mooro Country. These plants were chosen to reflect the native flora of the area, further enhancing the connection between the playground and the local landscape.

The Bina Parkland project, which has a total budget of $6.2 million, will continue to expand with stages two and three set to be completed by mid-2021. These stages will introduce even more facilities, including BMX tracks, a state-of-the-art skate facility, a multi-court sports area, and additional picnic areas. These additions are designed to cater to a wide range of recreational activities, ensuring that the parkland becomes a central hub for community engagement and outdoor fun.

The project has been made possible in part by a generous $2.34 million contribution from Lotterywest, which has a longstanding commitment to enhancing the quality of life for West Australians. As Australia’s only State Government-owned lottery, Lotterywest reinvests all its profits back into the community through funding and support for initiatives like the Bina Parkland project.

City of Stirling Deputy Mayor Bianca Sandri expressed her enthusiasm for the project’s progress, noting that the playground’s opening marks a significant milestone in the parkland’s development. “There was extensive community consultation leading up to this point, and it’s wonderful to see the new playground and the overall project taking shape based on community feedback,” she said. “The flying fox, in particular, has proven to be a favorite feature in other local playgrounds, and it’s sure to be a major attraction here in Balga as well.”

In addition to the playground, the City of Stirling has commissioned Arterial Design to create a series of integrated public artworks as part of the parkland project. These artworks will honor the traditional owners of the land and celebrate the diverse multicultural communities in the area. Visitors can look forward to seeing new artworks representing the six Nyoongar seasons and interactive pieces that will be installed by the end of the year.

For those planning to visit the new playground, the carpark on Camberwell Street offers convenient access to the site. With so much to see and do, the Bina Parkland playground is set to become a beloved destination for families and community members alike, offering a perfect blend of nature, art, and recreation.
