Creaney Education Support Centre

The Creaney Education Support Center, which opened its doors in 1986, places students in grades one through five who have an intellectual handicap, an autism spectrum disorder, or both. In the Kingsley neighborhood, it shares a campus with Creaney Primary School. This co-location enables them to offer small, specialized lessons that are tailored to each student’s requirements while simultaneously providing a variety of possibilities for integration with peers from the general population.

The average class size at Creaney ESC is six students, with one teacher and at least two (usually three) Education Assistants working with each group.

High-structured curricula based on the T.E.A.C.C.H., Applied Behaviour Analysis, and Direct Instruction theories are used to teach students. To promote independence and lessen nervous behaviors, the school uses visual and communication assistance. A combination of 1:1 instruction, solo work, small group, and full class instruction is possible due to the high staff to student ratio.

With each child’s learning program being established by an Individual Education Plan, teaching is highly personalized (IEP). IEPs are created in consultation with parents, staff, and appropriate specialists at the start of each semester. They discuss the precise teaching objectives and cover all eight domains of learning. To accomplish these goals, a differentiated curriculum must be created by the teaching team. Independence and the ability to generalize abilities to a variety of applications are stressed. Parents receive a written report at the conclusion of each semester that is specifically related to each IEP aim. Photographic proof of the development of skills is included in reports.

A sizable number of skilled Education Assistants provide excellent support for all instructors, who are all properly trained to work with pupils who have disabilities. Staff members regularly participate in professional development to make sure their evidence-based procedures reflect the most recent findings.

At the moment, Creaney ESC employs 12 teachers and 31 support personnel.

A variety of nearby suburbs send students to Creaney ESC. A contract bus is available for use by residents in the Center’s roughly fifteen-kilometer service area to get to school. There are now 43 pupils in the core Year 1 to 6 courses and 9 kids in the Early Intervention Unit.

Creaney ESC is extremely lucky to have a parent population that is very supportive. For the benefit of each student, staff, parents, and other professionals collaborate together. They have a functioning school board made up of staff and parent representatives. The Board currently consists of five parents, three employees, and one community representative. However, all parents are welcome to attend Board Meetings at any time and they are always open to the public. Creaney ESC’s successful application for Independent Public School status in 2017 was greatly aided by the School Board. The Board and staff collaborate closely to decide the Centre’s strategic direction.
