Dôme Café - Kingsley

The Background of Dôme

When Dôme first opened its doors in the middle of the 1980s, it was a speciality coffee roasting company. Since then, it has been meticulously cultivated into a wonderful community café setting.

The café business was launched in large part because to three founders, Phil May, Patria Jafferies, and Phil Sexton.

Mr. May competed in the triple jump at the Olympics in the 1970s, while Ms. Jafferies and Mr. Sexton founded the Australian brewery Matilda Bay before Dôme was even born. These few individuals’ enthusiasm and early efforts created the groundwork for the Dôme brand.

When Phil May decided to end his athletic career, he purchased this stunning French antique roaster in Melbourne, had it brought to Perth, and immediately began roasting. The Dôme coffee concept was conceived when his company, Western Roast Coffee, began supplying the Matilda Bay Brewery, where Patria worked.

The first Dôme café debuted in Cottesloe in 1991 after Phil May made the first roast on his old equipment around 30 years earlier. Today, there are more than 130 Dôme cafés operating in six different countries.

Olympic Athlete to Master Coffee Roaster

The triple jumper who was inducted into the Western Australian Institute of Sport Hall of Champions won six national championships and was a four-time Australian champion in the long jump in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Phil May won a gold medal in the triple jump and a silver medal in the long jump at the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh in 1970. His personal best of of 17.02m was recognized in the Olympic Games in Mexico.

When Phil suffered a significant foot injury in the early 1970s, things took a turn for the worst, forcing him to quit and look for a new challenge. Phil came up with the notion that would profoundly alter their life more than 30 years ago.

Already a world-class athlete, he focused on the common coffee bean. His perception To develop an exquisite mix using the finest coffee beans from plantations all around the world, then to delicately hand-roast it. The Dôme café is a beloved setting of warmth and familiarity where millions of people from all walks of life have made it their place to live, connect, speak, work, learn, unwind, laugh, cry, think, play, belong, and fall in love. From the beans he then took it to their cups.

He founded the first Dôme café with Patria Jafferies, and he remained a member of the family up until 2003. Phil’s life tragically came to an end in late 2014, but his memory will live on within every Dôme café’s four walls.
