History

In Western Australia, Meerilinga has been supporting happy childhoods for more than a century. Since their inception, Meerilinga has placed a strong emphasis on the value of children, families, and the community, and this focus still forms the basis of their work today. In 1911, Meerilinga was founded as the Kindergarten Union of Western Australia, and in 1913, the Kindergarten Training College followed. The Meerilinga Kindergarten and Sub-Primary School, which took its name from the Hay Street house, opened its doors in 1922 at Meerilinga House, 1186 Hay Street. Although the meaning of the name Meerilinga is unknown, it is believed to have originated from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island languages, where Meeri means far away, and Linga means thunder.

In 1985, the same year Western Australia joined the Children’s Week Council of Australia with Meerilinga serving as its official convener, the Meerilinga Council Inc. was established. With Meerilinga Council and WA Children’s Week as part of its charter, Meerilinga Young Children’s Foundation Inc. was founded in 1989. The property and house at Meerilinga were sold in 2003, and in 2006, Meerilinga moved to its current location in West Leederville.
