Vikings Softball Club
It wasn’t always like the Vikings we know today. It all started in 1981, when a new club called NORTHERN DIISTRICTS SOFTBALL CUB was established. They played for three years at the Girrawheen Oval until 1984 when they moved to Kingsway Sporting Complex. This might explain why the Clubrooms need to be redeveloped.
1997 was the year that it was decided that major changes were necessary. The theory was that a new name would lead to a new uniform. This is how VIKINGS SOFTBALL CLUB was founded. According to rumours, the Brown Coloured Uniform was not liked by the Men.
VSC was able to quickly make their mark in the competition with a new uniform and name. Did it have to do with the fact that they weren’t wearing Brown anymore? It depends on who you ask.
The 1998 Vikings won 5 Premierships, 1 Junior and 4 Senior Grand Finals. Vikings were a powerful force and deserved respect.
Vikings Softball Club was the largest Winter Men’s Softball club in the WASA competition, with up to 6 teams being nominated each season. Here came the women.
“We should have Vikings women’s team” was a mere suggestion until 2005 when the idea that began as a simple thought at the sidelines of one men’s game became a feasible reality.
All members quickly voted for a women’s team at the next Committee Meeting. Thus, the Vikings Women’s Section of the Viking’s softball club was born. Despite the initial fear of failure, the 2005/06 season saw the debut of a women’s team in the WASA Summer Softball Competition at Yokine Reserve. Since then, they have grown. They created their own constitution in 2016, becoming Vikings Women’s Fastpitch Club Inc.
PSL Competitions are not the only place Viking women go. They have sent teams to the Pan Pacific Masters Games, Queensland, and the Northwest Championships, Port Hedland. In WA, they also participate in carnivals and tournaments. They have also played in Canada as well as Italy, Sydney, and Italy as part the World Masters Championships.
They celebrate their successes and victories as a Club, from Mirrabooka through Torino and beyond.
Vikings’ Summer Season ended in 2021 with two junior teams and six senior teams. Three of these teams made it to the finals series. You wouldn’t want to be anywhere else but surrounded by Vikings family and friends playing the game they love, SOFTBALL.
