The History of Wadjak Northside

The establishment of Wadjak Northside Aboriginal Community Centre is a testament to the collective strength and determination of the local Aboriginal community. The Centre was formed through the unification of two community groups that shared a common goal of improving the lives of Aboriginal people in the northern suburbs of Perth, particularly in the areas served by the City of Stirling and the City of Wanneroo.

One of these groups originated from a small initiative known as Northside Noongars Growing and Learning, which was funded by The Smith Family. This initiative brought together parents, grandparents, and carers of Aboriginal students attending Balga Senior High School, who wanted to create better opportunities for the youth in their care. They were motivated by the desire to provide young Aboriginal people with the support and resources they needed to succeed both academically and personally.

At the same time, members of the Social Inclusion Group, a collaboration of agencies and organizations working to assist local populations in the Mirrabooka, Koondoola, Girrawheen, and Balga areas, were also working towards improving community outcomes. Recognizing the shared vision of both groups, they decided to join forces under the banner of Wadjak Northside. Together, they began working towards the community’s longstanding dream of establishing an Aboriginal Resource Centre.

In December 2012, the Wadjak Northside Aboriginal Community Group was officially incorporated as an organization. This marked the beginning of a new chapter, with a clear focus on addressing the social, educational, and economic needs of Aboriginal people in the region. In 2013, the organization began launching key projects, including the development of the Aboriginal Community Resource Centre and the creation of a business enterprise. These initiatives aim to create sustainability for the Centre while also providing valuable training and employment opportunities for local community members.

They are immensely proud of the progress Wadjak Northside has made since its inception, and they remain committed to carrying forward the vision of those who came before them.
