The YMCA was established in 1844, during the Industrial Revolution in England, an era of extreme despair and extreme poverty. George Williams, a drapery merchant was convinced that something needed to change. He joined a group of members to form a society that would meet regularly to help one another and build energy in mind, body and spirit. The group was referred to as “the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA). From the beginning of its existence, until the beginning of 1900 the main focus was the wellbeing of young men as well as social issues.
Along with others who were founding the group, George Williams wasted no time in organizing YMCA branches across England, Scotland and Ireland. In the following ten years, YMCA movements also started to grow all over Western Europe, USA, Australia, New Zealand, and India.
From the 1930s until the mid 1960s The YMCA was forced by the Depression and the war in the world to return to its initial foundations of community and social concern. The focus was on youth activities, youth clubs, physical development, leadership education as well as education and welfare. YMCA branches and associations can be everywhere in the world.
The YMCA has grown tremendously since its founding in 1844. To be a part of the YMCA today, you don’t need to be male, young or Christian! Today, they’re a lively active, vibrant community organization which aims to make a difference by providing each person with the chance to be happy, healthy and connected.
The Eastern Goldfields YMCA was first founded in 1902. In the midst of the First World War, the Association fluctuated until, with the help by Kalgoorlie as well as Boulder Rotary and the Perth YMCA in the years 1947-1949 an official constitution was put in place.
In July of 2016, Eastern Goldfields YMCA merged with YMCA WA to bring all activities at Kalgoorlie within the YMCA WA umbrella. The decision was taken jointly by the two organizations to ensure that families as well as children and youth throughout the region have a strong and committed YMCA within their communities.
